As AP exam season approaches, students at Homewood High School feel the pressure of balancing challenging coursework with other responsibilities. Seniors shared their advice on managing time, studying effectively, and keeping stress in check.
Avery Hill emphasizes the importance of studying in small chunks. “Studying little bits at a time works best for me,” she said. “You don’t have to study every day, but tackling the material bit by bit makes it easier.”
Tamara Calhoun warns against complacency. “Every time you think you’re done with something, there’s more to do. Never say you don’t have anything left; that extra effort could mean the difference between getting a 2 and a 5.”
Crawford Merriman agrees on the need for efficiency. “Be efficient with your time,” he advises. “Use short periods wisely to study or review material.”
When it comes to study techniques, students have their favorites. Avery finds flashcards and review tests helpful, while Crawford likes using review quizzes and worksheets. Tamara recommends Lumisource, a free website offering study guides, notes, and practice tests for various AP courses. “It’s a great resource, especially for vocabulary-heavy subjects,” she noted.
Managing stress is crucial during this busy time. Tamara, found success in pacing herself. “Setting a pace for myself helped a lot,” she said.
Reflecting on their experiences, seniors shared advice they wish they had received before starting AP courses. Avery cautions against overcommitting, saying, “Don’t take more than four APs at a time; not every AP is made equally , some are easier and some are harder.” Crawford echoes this, urging students to choose relevant AP classes. “Be ready for what you’re getting into.”
Tamara encourages students to remember that there’s always time to study. “You don’t have to take AP courses to feel smart,” she said, reminding everyone that success isn’t just about the number of AP classes.
As AP exam season approaches, these seniors’ insights can guide current students navigating their own paths. With effective time management, the right resources, and a balanced approach to studying, success is within reach.
