Homewood Show Choirs will hold a Dessert Cabaret on April 22 and April 24 for their spring show. In this ticketed event, families will have dessert in the lunchroom pre-show served by show choir upperclassmen at 6 p.m. with the show following at 7 p.m. The show will feature songs from a selection of movies picked by seniors.
Show choir director Byron Mosquera says his committee of show choir students’ parents will bring a themed dessert to the event. Desserts will also be donated from many local businesses such as Hero Donuts and Saws BBQ.
“This is part of our four year rotation–so last year–we did a Broadway revue, this year it’s going to be the Dessert Cabaret, next year it’s a spring review, and then on the fourth year we do a musical,” Mosquera said. “The idea actually came from Oak Mountain High School because they do one every year, and we loved the idea of what they did.”
Show choir Co-President Nate Shull is a “huge fan” of the concept of Dessert Cabaret.
“I think it’ll be cool–it’s a good way for people to talk before the show and kind of get settled in,” Shull said. “They’ll get their dessert and they’ll just be in a good mood and then go watch the show and have a great time.”
Mosquera stresses this show as an opportunity for seniors to express their creativity and leadership.
“They pick all the songs that they want to perform, and how big their groups are then choreograph it, do the cuts of the music, and pick out the costumes,” Mosquera said. “It’s like giving them the opportunity to be in a director position for just one song, so I think it’s a great opportunity for them.”
Dance captain Adesh Mishra remarks choreographing his part of spring show is an interesting and fun experience.
“I’ve done show choir for four years and I really enjoy dancing but this is a whole new perspective and a whole new take on dancing,” Mishra said. “For sure it’s definitely frustrating but once something clicks in a song and you’re choreographing it just starts kind of floating and it’s really cool to see your image on stage.”
Mosquera notes anyone can enjoy the show and anyone is welcome to come.
“There’s older movies the parents will love, then there’s newer movies the younger kids will like, so it’s a family-friendly show to where no matter what your age is, you’re gonna see something you really like,” Mosquera said.
