The flag football team stormed back from 14 points down against Oak Mountain on Tuesday night to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat, extending its win streak to three games.

The senior night victory added to wins over Parker and Ramsay the night before.

A slow start to the first half began with Oak Mountain’s two touchdowns without much response from the Patriots.

During the team’s halftime talk, however, Patriots head coach Rebecca Shields urged the team to maintain the high morale from their wins the previous night.

A pass by Liesel Kellen to Sadie Busbee in the endzone got the Patriots their first touchdown shortly into the second half.

Minutes later senior Suzanna Busbee, the game’s MVP, scored the Patriots’ second touchdown, setting Homewood up to complete its comeback against the Eagles.

The Patriots went for a two-point conversion after Busbee’s score, but could not convert, leaving the score at 14-12 in favor of the visitors.

The momentum picked up on the field by the Patriots’ comeback was reflected in the stadium and on the sidelines during the second half with a small but mighty student section, cheerleaders and team cheering the players on with nothing but support.

With time running out, the Eagles made an attempt to run the clock, ultimately pushing themselves back with a crucial penalty.

Shortly after, Sadie scored the team’s third touchdown, ensuring the win for the Patriots with only 15 seconds left on the clock. This time, the Patriots succeeded on the two-point conversion to close out the game.

“This group has a lot of fight in them,” Shields said. “When we played [Oak Mountain] the first time they beat us, and so we had a little vendetta, but we came back and showed them that we’ve grown and we’ve improved.”
