Coming off of a frustrating end to last season with an early first-round exit in the playoffs, the Homewood High Boys Basketball Team is eager to return to its former glory and improve upon last season’s disappointing conclusion with their season-opener.

Tim Shepler, head coach of the Patriots, is confident that the team will be able to accomplish these goals. However, he also says that it will take the team some time to get into their groove after the off-season.

“I expect some of those first game jitters,” Shepler said. “But I also expect us to lose the nervousness pretty quickly and hit the ground running after these first few games.”

Latham Binkley, Junior forward, expressed his desire for a competitive season. He feels optimistic about the team’s potential and wants to take advantage of the opportunity.

“Our expectations and goals are pretty high this year,” Binkley said. “Partially because of our early exit, and partially because we know our potential.”

Fellow returning player, David Stone, a Senior center with 5 current collegiate offers, also thinks that the team has a high prospect for success.

“For us, we know how well we can shoot the ball,” Stone said. “Not only that but our team chemistry is very good. We’re like a family and it’s always jokes and fun mixed with hard work.”

The chemistry among the members of the varsity squad is another factor that adds to the team’s positive attributes. Stone believes the team will easily be able to work together through the ups and downs of the season because of their camaraderie.

Coach Shepler adds that the team is very good about spreading the ball on offense and getting baskets. They’re still working to improve upon their defense, including effectively getting rebounds. However, Shepler predicts that their current weaknesses will be improved upon as they get more game experience.

“It’s about improving throughout the year and playing your best basketball,” Shepler said.

The team is ready for action tonight in their season-opener away against the Chelsea Hornets. Only the beginning of a season with a great potential for success for the varsity team.
