After a frustrating end to the outdoor season in the spring, the HHS indoor track team is ready for revenge as they open their season on Saturday, Dec. 7. Hours of hard work and dedication in the off-season have prepared the team to meet their goals.
Head coach Logan Cornutt expects the team to have a successful season, as many of the athletes are extremely driven and talented. He has implemented team-building and goal-setting exercises to create a positive dynamic among the students.
“Last [indoor season] was a really good year for us and I feel like this year we could be even better. Our girls and boys teams have every opportunity in front of them to potentially be better than we were last year.” Cornutt said.
Cross-country state champion Emma Brook Levering is just one of the crucial seniors Cornutt coaches. Other top senior performers include Zaire White and Colvin Bussey for the boys’ side and Madeline Alford and Ada McElroy for the girls.
“Our senior class is very good. This is probably the best senior class I’ve ever coached. They bring so much talent to the team along with some of the underclassmen as well.” Cornutt said.
Senior Madeline Alford has been running varsity track since her freshman year and is very grateful for her time in the program.
“This program has helped me build mental toughness and have accountability for myself. If you want to get better at your individual event, you have to know what you need to do to get better.” Alford said.
Both the girls and boys varsity teams have set the goal to win state this year and with their wide array of talent, Cornutt believes they have a shot at bringing home the win.
“I’m really hoping our girls and boys teams can do well this year and win state. That would be amazing for us.” Alford said.
