Football dress-up days are a cherished tradition to boost school spirit at Homewood High School. The end of football season usually means that these spirit days are over until the next fall; however, this year HHS decided to extend the fun for basketball season.
During football season, executive SGA comes up with the themes for each week. They’ve come up with new ones for select basketball games this season, an initiative aimed at increasing student participation and excitement for basketball games.
Varsity basketball coach William Garrison collaborated with SGA on this new addition to game days.
“We have dress-up days to create excitement around the event and if it turns into a social event, more of our students come and have fun,” Garrison said.
This season is Garrison’s first year as head coach. He has made it a goal to create an exciting atmosphere for his players and the student body.
“Our administration has fully supported the ideas I’ve had, so we’re just trying new things and finding what works for us now,” Garrison said.
Senior and SGA Executive Secretary Cate Geer helps decide the themes and ensures none are repeated in the same year.
“It’s hard, you have to look at the team’s mascot, make sure the theme is school-appropriate and make sure it’s something easy enough that everyone can participate in,” Geer said.
Dressing up provides students and faculty with a fun activity during game weeks and gets the whole school involved in the pre-game festivities.
“At Homewood dressing up and going all out is such a big thing that everyone’s a part of and it takes the pressure off of school,” Geer said.
Vice President of School Spirit Emma Lawrence encourages everyone to dress up to promote school spirit and pride while also supporting athletics.
“Our goal is always trying to boost student involvement and school spirit,” Lawrence said. “Dress-up days give people who aren’t in a sport a way to feel involved and included.”
