From Nov. 7 to 15, the Student Government Association held its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to support the Trinity Outreach Hub food bank.
The Trinity Outreach Hub supports the community by providing food and other resources to those in need. Their mission depends entirely upon donations and volunteers, making HHS’s donation of 1710 pounds of food (approx. 1425 meals) a major contribution.
SGA collected donations by setting up tables in the school’s front and back offices and gathering non-perishable items before school. Students earned five class points per item donated.
The sophomore class was in charge of organizing the drive, so the main volunteers were sophomore class representatives, with some Beta Club members.
Last year’s Thanksgiving Food Drive collected 841 pounds of food, equivalent to over 700 meals, with this year more than doubling that amount.
SGA sponsor Michelle Cooley says that student participation in these donation drives are essential to character building and making an impact on the community.
“It’s always important to give back to the community so it’s a way we can help others especially as we head into the holiday season,” Cooley said.
SGA Executive President Henry Harrell was happy to help a good cause by organizing donations and tallying class points. He said that this year’s food drive was very successful.
“Here at Homewood we’re very fortunate,” Harrell said. “We’re just giving back to the community because the community gives us a lot, so it’s just good to give back.”
In December, HHS will host another donation drive. This will be a holiday angel drive in which students will donate new, unwrapped toys. Items collected will be distributed to families in need during the holiday season.
