The Homewood High School Indoor Track team is ready for a successful season.
Last season was quite successful for the outdoor team, with the boys finishing in 2nd place at state behind McGill-Toolen and the girls finishing in 3rd behind Mountain Brook and Northridge. Now the squad is hoping that the outdoor success translates to the successful indoor season that everyone hopes is to come.
Despite losing some studs from last year’s senior athletes, including Division 1 commits, twins Grayton and Ben Murray (Samford and Mississippi State) and Brooke Walden (Auburn), this team hopes that some younger players are willing to step up and shine during this indoor track tenure.
Indoor coach Logan Cornutt thinks very highly of this new group.
“Lots of talent from the seniors to the freshmen,” Cornutt said. “That could really impact how this year pans out for us.”
Some of those impactful players include runners Isaiah Davis, Colvin Bussey, Zaire White, Emma Brooke Levering and Will Doughty. Along with key throwers like Sadie Busbee and Layla Essalah.
However, the number one challenge for success at the high school level is the lack of experience. This team is very young with lots of new contributors to the team. This challenge is impacting everyone, including junior Zaire White. However, he believes that this team can have major success this year, despite the obstacles faced.
“Losing a lot of key players, it will be hard,” White said. “But I do think that this team can make some noise this year in the state.”
The team has had two meets so far and succeeded with lots of metaled runners in the 3200 meter, 400 meter, and in the hurdles. They have a meet on Wednesday, January 10th at the Birmingham Crossplex.
They hope that success thus far motivates the team to have a successful season this winter.
