In a strategic move to enhance sports communication, HHS has launched an innovative sports broadcasting system that brings fans closer to the action than ever before. Led by assistant athletic director John Lunceford, the new broadcast team combines professional expertise with local talent to provide real-time game coverage.
The commentary team features head freshman baseball and football coach, Chet Walker, adjunct University of Alabama instructor Glenn Brasher and professional broadcaster Curt Bloom. Their combined experience and familiarity with Homewood athletics blend together to give viewers an insider’s perspective on HHS’s athletic programs. Their goal expands past a simple play-by-play rundown, focusing instead on storytelling that connects players, families and fans.
“We wanted to help parents and grandparents who can’t attend games understand what’s happening,” Walker explained. “Now someone in Texas can watch their grandson make a crucial play and hear the context behind it.”
The broadcasts, available on YouTube and through the NFHS mobile app, offer more than just game footage. The commentators prepare extensively, filming player interviews, pregame content and detailed game analysis.
“We wanted to promote our players and be a trendsetter,” Walker explained.
The team has credited a lot of the success to broadcasting veteran Bloom, who at nine years old made the decision to become a sports broadcaster. Today, Bloom has transformed that childhood dream into a 38-year career in play-by-play broadcasting.
Since his first media job with the Bakersfield Dodgers at age 24, he has become a prominent voice in Alabama sports, currently announcing college basketball and baseball alongside his work for Homewood athletics.
His broadcasting philosophy, to “combine passion with work ethic and knowledge”, remains a guiding principle in his commentary style.
Influenced by New York broadcasting legend Marv Albert, Bloom emphasizes the importance of being authentically oneself.
With a vision to elevate HHS sports broadcasting, Bloom is committed to setting a level playing field to help Homewood stay competitive with more resourced programs like Hoover.
“If you’ve got passion and desire, we can minimize that gap,” Bloom said.
