While most of Homewood was in relaxation mode during spring break, freshman Charles Stone competed at the Adidas Track Nationals in Virginia Beach, VA. There, he ran an improbable 4:29 minute mile and won the Freshman 800-meter race.
For Stone, this accomplishment took a lot of preparation. Along with his season full of training, Stone strategically planned his workout, recovery and diet plans leading up to the competition to perform his best.
Stone was pumped about winning nationals.
“It felt really good to win the freshman class 800 meter,” Stone said. “To get to be a part of it and accomplish the long-term goal of winning, it felt really nice.”
Homewood track coach Logan Cornutt is incredibly proud of Stone’s achievements and mainly credits his work ethic and desire to get better at the sport.
“Charles is definitely a hard worker and he does everything that he can to be the best that he can like his fitness, nutrition and recovery,” Cornutt said. “To have a freshman come into this program that young and aware of things is really good for us.”
Cornutt describes Stone as a kid who is “wise beyond his years”. He says that definitely helped Stone compete the way he did at nationals.
“He’s very mature for a freshman in terms of his training and nutrition and recovery,” Cornutt said. “For him to go win, that was a huge win for him.”
The result of the race wasn’t close either. Stone came in first place by about two seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Cornutt had faith that Stone would be on top at the competition.
“We were confident that Charles would do well,” Cornutt said. “For him to go there and win convincingly, we couldn’t ask for a better result for him.”
Stone still has three more years of his high school track and field career in front of him. He has not only set a standard for himself but for the whole program to set goals and work hard to achieve them.
