Course Selection has begun for rising 9-12th graders at Homewood High School. Students must take into account their individual circumstances when choosing their classes for the upcoming year. We asked many seniors for advice they would give to younger students when deciding their courses for the next school year.
Some seniors suggested spreading out challenging courses over their high school careers to lighten the workload.
“I think it is important to balance advanced and AP classes out over your high school career so that you are not taking too many challenging courses at once.” – Ella Serotsky
“Don’t overestimate the time you have available to put into studying and doing homework; don’t take so many classes that you can’t excel in.” – Annabelle Coan
“Keep the future in mind and classes that will help you with possible future jobs. Don’t wait to take pre-calc until senior year; get it over with in advance.” – Elijah Copeland
“Don’t stress, everything will work out the way it’s supposed to. Take AP Psych, Stats, and Gov-Econ if you are looking for a manageable AP course.” – Mariyah Ahmed
“Take Earth and Space and Forensics if you are looking for an interesting science class but one that is manageable and has an easy workload. The teachers are also great.” – Annie Crouch
Other seniors recommended taking more difficult classes early to ensure a fun and relaxed senior year.
“I would advise people to take AP Psychology because it is very interesting, but try not to take it senior year. There is a lot of work involved that you might not want to do when the senioritis kicks in.” – Julia Anne Heathcock
“Get your AP classes out of the way before senior year.” Think about college and what classes you’ll need in college because that’s important, and I didn’t think about that until senior year.” – Carmen Klimcak
“Junior year is a stressful period, but go ahead and get your harder classes done then. It makes senior year so much easier when you worked really hard junior year. But also don’t overload yourself. If you have a ton of extracurriculars, take that into account and remember you will be preparing for the ACT.” – Ellie Moncrief
“Take AP Psychology as a sophomore or junior because it will help you in the future. Also, take APUSH because it sets you up for harder AP classes that you might take in later years. It’s a good intro AP class and is very interesting if you like history” – Charlotte Murphree
“Take all your hard classes early on if possible. That way, you can have a fun senior year and late arrival or early dismissal.” – Katharine Fitts
Some seniors recommended taking courses you are interested in and not worrying about the difficulty.
“Honestly challenge yourself, take into account your limits, but there’s no point in not taking an AP class because you think it’ll be too hard. The teachers are good, and it’ll all be fine, so you should push yourself.” – Charley Chewning
“Don’t take classes just because your friends are taking them; take classes that will help you get into college and will be good for you personally.” – Abby Mchelany
“Pick a class based on interest. I picked marine science because I love dolphins” – Caroline Dabbs
“Pick things you are interested in and will enjoy learning about, not just the easier option.” – Tad Crumpton
