HHS students will get to show off their singing ー and spelling ー skills this fall in the theater department’s production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
The production, a musical comedy, features nine characters, hilarious dialogue and a variety of songs. This is the first musical HHS has seen since the performance of “Leap of Faith” in 2019.
Amy Marchino, HHS creative writing teacher and theater assistant, plays a large role in the audition and production process for the theater department alongside Jason Kennah. Last spring, they opened auditions to the entire school for the production of “Shakespeare’s Hilarious Tragedies,” a move which attracted new faces to theater.
“We want more kids exposed to the theater program,” Marchino said. “We want to make sure that everybody knows this is something that we do at Homewood.”
This musical was chosen for its relevant subject matter as it pertains to the ups and downs young students face while in high school.
“Anytime kids can relate to being a student, even if they’ve never been in a spelling bee, it’s relatable,” Marchino said.
The production has attracted many new people to the school’s theater department. Junior Edie Herring, who participates in show choir, is excited to audition for her first theater project at the school.
“Over the past year I’ve been doing more theater and when I heard we were doing a musical here, it was so convenient for me to get involved in the program,” Herring said.
This summer, Herring auditioned and was accepted into a musical theater camp in New Jersey where she took classes from talented vocalists on Broadway.
“I want to study theater in college, so getting to take classes from people on Broadway really solidified that for me,” she said.
Auditions will take place in the Bailey Theater on Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm.
