Homewood High School fall sports kicked off the start of their seasons on Friday, August 16 marking Homewood High School’s first media day and the start of a new tradition.
The event was hosted at Homewood’s new establishment, The Edge, located on Greensprings. HHS Athletic Secretary Debbie Chancellor remarked on the new and growing relationship Homewood has with The Edge.
“The Edge is one of our gold sponsors,” said Chancellor. “We in turn wanted to reciprocate and give them some business as well and let everybody know that they are new and open.”
The Edge is home to many restaurants including Baba Jav Coffee & Popbar, B’ham Burgers, Shin Ramen, The Que’bicle, and Corbeau Outdoor Bar.
“There are not many places with large enough capacity where we could have dinner and serve the parents,” Chancellor said.
Although the weather slightly delayed the show, the storm let up for media day to begin. The event had a great turnout with hundreds of people in attendance. Football, cheerleading, volleyball, flag football, and cross-country teams were introduced to friends, family and fans.
“The team started on one end of The Edge, walked through the crowd, and went on stage for seniors to be introduced,” Chancellor said.
Varsity football quarterback Will Myers enjoyed the walkthrough as he thought it was a good way to bring excitement and engagement to supporters.
HHS sports media teacher and freshman volleyball coach Ainsley Shultz introduced the teams and interviewed the varsity coaches.
Coaches were asked about their pre-season work, upcoming schedules, team dynamics, etc. Each of the teams’ seniors was introduced.
After the event, posters were distributed to families and athletes boasting all of the fall sports home game schedules.
Myers thought the event was successful for the engagement of the teams and their families, as well as those following Homewood Athletics.
“The event definitely helped to promote fall sports and will hopefully increase game turnout,” he said.
Homewood Athletics hopes to continue hosting media day for upcoming seasons and years to kick off each sport and will be hosted again in October for winter sports and in January for spring sports.
